Dubai Can: Leading the Charge Towards a Greener Future
In an achievement highlighting the commitment to sustainability, Dubai Can, the citywide initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has reported a substantial reduction in single-use plastic waste. Since its inception on February 15, 2022, the initiative has successfully diverted the equivalent of almost 18 million 500ml single-use plastic water bottles from landfills in just two years.
Aligned with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Can aims to transform Dubai into a leading sustainable destination and contribute to global environmental goals. With the installation of 50 public water stations positioned across the city, including parks and popular tourist destinations, nearly 9 million litres of water have been dispensed, encouraging residents and visitors to opt for refillable alternatives.
Yousuf Lootah, Acting CEO of Corporate Strategy and Performance Sector, Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, expressed pride in the initiative's success, mentioning its role in protecting oceans, wildlife, and natural landscapes. The initiative not only promotes a healthier lifestyle but also aligns with Dubai's economic agenda to position the city among the top global destinations for business and leisure.
Partnering with businesses, Dubai Can has garnered strong stakeholder support to facilitate the refilling of public water fountains. Notable partners include talabat UAE, Dell Technologies, Emirates NBD, Shamal Holding, Emirates Literature Foundation, and Radisson Hotel Group, among others, who have contributed to the initiative's progress.
Reflecting the growing momentum towards sustainability, private companies across the emirate have followed suit by installing water fountains in their offices, further reducing single-use plastics in the workplace.
Maintaining the highest hygiene standards and compliance with regulations, all water stations offer clean and safe drinking water, promoting a 'refill culture' among residents and visitors. With an average UAE resident using 450 plastic water bottles annually, Dubai Can continues to advocate for waste reduction and prevent millions of plastic bottles from polluting landfills and oceans.
In addition to its achievements in waste reduction, Dubai Can has embarked on another ambitious project, the Dubai Reef, launched in December 2023. As one of the world's largest marine reef developments, Dubai Reef aims to increase fish stocks, support sustainable fishing practices, and enhance food security while mitigating carbon emissions and boosting marine biodiversity.
As the UAE extends its 'Year of Sustainability' into 2024, Dubai Can remains committed to expanding its impact, with plans to install 30 additional water fountains by year-end, encouraging further adoption of sustainable practices and contributing to a greener future for Dubai and beyond.
